Chile’s Electrical and Combustibles Supervisory Committee (Superintendencia de Electricidad y Combustibles, SEC) requires all electrical products sold in Chile to obtain certification in accordance with Decree No. 313. The mandatory verification scope includes some household appliances, wires, switches, circuit breakers, measuring equipment and lamps. The SEC adopts IEC or Chilean standards that are equivalent to IEC. According to the verification regulations, manufacturers are required to send samples to laboratories in Chile for testing.

The final certification authority in Chile is the SEC, but the certificate must first be issued by a local authorized certification agency in Chile, and the test must be completed by an officially authorized testing agency in Chile, and the certificate cannot be transferred. Verification requirements: sample testing (must be completed by a Chilean authorized testing agency) + factory inspection (determined according to the product situation) + first batch inspection of goods (mandatory requirement), verification standard: basically IEC.

Normative content

Chile has implemented mandatory certification for some home appliances. The product range covered by Decree No. 399 is detailed in the “List of Electrical Products Subject to Mandatory Certification” published on the website of the Electrical and Inflammable Materials Supervision Committee. The “List of Electrical Products Subject to Mandatory Verification” currently includes about 100 products. About 30 of these should be tested using the Chilean standard. The remaining products are tested and verified according to IEC standards. In principle, SEC directly adopts IEC standards or Chilean standards that are equivalent to IEC. Chile’s safety standards for electrical products (Chilean NCh standards) are based on IEC standards; the certification system for electronic products, such as consumer electronics, telecommunications equipment and information technology equipment, is still being developed.
